about

Plastic pollution of the world's oceans is now recognised as a major environmental issue. It has been suggested that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. This piece explores how marine ecosystems are being transformed as a result of this pollution. All of the source sounds were created from plastic materials collected from a beach in Dorset, southern England. The structure of the piece follows an imaginary journey through an ocean ecosystem that has been completely transformed by plastic. Starting from the shore and entering the sea, we move through a reef populated by a high diversity of plastic organisms, interacting as a community of detritus. We then dive down the continental slope, where maybe there are sea monsters lurking and other bizarre plastic lifeforms, to reach the abyssal depths beyond.
